The mind and the heart are arguably the two most important organs that you have. Your heart will pump about 2.5 billion times by the time you reach age seventy. If you want to live longer, you want to have a healthy heart.

Your brain function is going to change depending on how you age. In almost every case, it’s going to be on the decline as you get older. It doesn’t have to be that way though. Follow these tips to a healthy heart and mind, and you’re sure to feel a lot better as you get older.

  1. You should be mentally stimulating your brain all the time. The activity of the mind keeps cells from diminishing, or at least from diminishing so quickly. Do things like painting, crafts, drawing, puzzles, or math problems.
  2. Physical activity is good for both the heart and the mind. You are reducing stress, and that helps your heart. By using the muscles necessary to complete the exercise, you are also stimulating the mind. Research has shown that animals that exercise get more blood vessels carrying blood rich in the oxygen to the brain where thought occurs. Exercise is beneficial in other ways too like lowering blood and balancing your blood and improving cholesterol.
  3. A healthy weight is vital for heart health. When you are doing physical exercise, you should have no problem reaching what’s considered to be healthy weight over time. Just make sure that you maintain it and don’t try to carry around too many extra pounds. It only adds stress to the body and makes your heart work harder.
  4. It has been shown that people who eat a diet rich in fish, nuts, vegetables, fruits, unsaturated oil, and plant sources of proteins aren’t as likely to develop some sort of cognitive impairment or dementia. Eating a healthy diet is also essential for good heart health. Fiber, fatty fish, and a limit on sugar are all excellent additions for a healthy heart.
  5. Tobacco avoidance is necessary for both heart and mind health. There are no benefits to smoking whatsoever for any part of your body.
  6. Drinking should be done only in moderation for a healthy mind and heart. Moderation is two drinks per day or less for an average-sized man.
  7. Take care of your emotional state. Those that are anxious stressed, depressed, or not getting enough sleep get lower scores on tests related to cognitive functioning. That doesn’t necessarily solidify that those individuals are going to have mental health problems in the future, but stable mental health is going to be beneficial for the mind and body anyways.
  8. Create a stable support system. It’s essential to have people in your social circle that you can turn to and rely on when you need someone to listen or help out. By having strong ties into a social world, research has proven that those people have a lower chance of developing dementia and other mental health problems. There is also evidence that it keeps blood pressure lower which is good for the heart. In all, a secure social network is associated with a living a longer life.
  9. Low-dose aspirin has shown that it may reduce the risk of dementia. That holds even truer for vascular dementia. There have been other studies done that show taking a baby aspirin or low-dose version can be beneficial to the cardiovascular system and perhaps even prevent a heart attack. If you are considering adding one to your daily ritual, it’s best that you first talk to your doctor.
  10. Keep yourself protected physically whenever you can. If you are doing something that would be considered a risk for injury to your head, make sure you wear protective gear. That could be a job, playing or sport, or even going a little more extreme. The same goes for keeping your heart and the rest of your body protected. If you’re going to be riding a BMX bike or jumping out of an airplane, make sure that you have on proper pads and other safety equipment in case of an accident.
  11. Blood pressure, blood sugar, and cholesterol are all essential to keep in check for both heart and mind health. You should be seeing a doctor regularly to have regular examinations on not only your physical condition, but also what’s going on inside of your body. If there are problems with any of these, your doctor may be able to give you advice on how to balance them naturally. If what you’re doing already isn’t working, there may be medications out there that can help you obtain healthier levels.
