STD screening procedure in Singapore

Diseases are broadly classified as communicable and non-communicable. STD is the example of the former one. STD is a type of communicable infection which is spread from one person to another through unprotected sex with the infected person. Human Immune deficiency Virus is major cause for STD specially, AIDS. To detect this infection STD testing Singapore has series of HIV test. HIV can cause infection to other by contaminating their normal body system. If the infected person mucosal fluid like semen or blood is transmitted to healthy person, he/she may also become infected person.

How is STD tested in Singapore?

In Singapore, the testing is totally depended upon from the time to exposure. The STD testing Singapore screens STD in the following stages:

  • Less than 3 days or 72 hours:

If a person time from exposure is less than 3 days or 72 hours, no testing is prescribed at this stage. This is because as it is the infection initiation level, proper result interruption is not possible.

  • 10-14 days:

At this span of time, the blood and urine samples of the infected person may or may not have the strains of HIV RNA or DNA. Hence at this span of time, the infection is tested using Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR), using the blood sample of the infected individual. This test detects the presence of Virus genetic material in sample.

  • 21-28 days or more:
  1. HIV Duo test :

If the infection exposure has crossed more than 25 days, a special testing called HIV Duo test is done by the physicians. In this test, two defects are screened. Firstly the viral coat protein in the infected person is identified. Secondly the amount of antibody the infected person body has produced to HIV Virus. HIV Duo test negative, happy no STD infection, But if Positive, follow up service is essential.

  1. HIV Duo 4th generation test:

After 28 days, the infected person body start to produce protein called P24 an antigen against HIV antibody. Very rapid and accurate test as it is detected by antigen and antibody interaction. In this method the blood sample is collected from the infected individual. It is screened for the presence of P24 antigen traces. The P24 antigen is the one which is triggered by the body against the HIV antibody. When this particular antigen is present in the blood, it is interpreted that the individual is HIV infected.

  • More than 28 days or 4 weeks:

When the infection is 4 weeks old, it is tested using ELISA, Oraquick test and Rapid finger prick test.

The infected person blood is screened for availability of antibodies against HIV. The sample is tested with antigen. If the antigen and antibody interaction occurs, it is positive result. In no reaction, then it is negative. Once you are exposed to ELISA, it is a confirmation testing method.

Or quick:

More than one month infection is evident that the HIV has spread in the body. Keeping this as root cause, Rapid oral saliva-1/2 antibody test is carried out. In this the oral fluid from the infected person mouth is collected using a swab. When this swab inserted into the antigen liquid,

Two band formations at C and T is positive, whereas band only at C is negative. It is very safe and highly recommended test.

Rapid finger prick blood HIV-1/2 antibody test:

This method is highly used because the result is interpreted in less time. Using a small needle. The finger is pricked and blood sample is collected and is kept for testing. Antigen-antibody interaction causes agglutination, hence the result is positive.

Why do you need to test for HIV?

When a person wontedly or accidentally encounters a sex with infected person, it is highly recommended that he/she has to test himself/herself for HIV infection in their body. This is because STD caused by HIV is highly dangerous. Sometimes it even becomes life threatening. Early testing or screening allows you to start the treatment process earlier. The STD is of many types, few may have severe symptoms and other may not have any symptoms. Waiting for symptom to arise is a foolish act. To protect you from STD, approach whose test for STD is rapid, accurate and less cost.
